What types of fluids can be used in heat recovery systems?
The choice of fluid in heat recovery system will depend upon the source of heat, temperature, pressure, and the use of recovered heat energy. Water is one of the most popular fluids used in such applications owing to its good thermal conductivity and availability. Water can be heated for process use, heating purpose or even to generate steam.
Use of thermal oil is suitable when higher temperature operations are required but at low pressures. Thermal oils are widely employed in industries that require consistent heat transfer. Glycol fluids like mixtures of water and propylene glycol can be considered in cases when freezing protection is required.
In some high temperature applications, air can serve as the heat transfer medium. Refrigerants may also be used in specialized heat recovery and heat pump systems where low grade heat needs to be upgraded for useful applications.
The right fluid should be compatible with the heat exchanger materials and process conditions. Proper selection helps “heat recovery systems” transfer energy efficiently while reducing corrosion, maintenance, and operating problems.
