  • What Should I Consider When Choosing Home Heating Radiators?

Posted by addison barry on June 19, 2026 at 2:28 pm

    Hello everyone,

I’m planning to upgrade the heating system in my home and would like some advice about home heating radiators. There seem to be many options available, including panel radiators, column radiators, and designer models, and I’m not sure which would be best for efficiency and comfort.

I’m also interested in understanding how radiator size, material, and placement affect heating performance and energy costs. Are there specific brands or features that you would recommend for a typical family home?

I’d appreciate any tips, experiences, or common mistakes to avoid before making a final decision.

Panel radiators are the most practical choice for a typical family home. Double panel double convector models give the best heat output for the size and are ideal for larger rooms. Brands like Stelrad, Zehnder, and Kudox are reliable and widely available.

Always use a BTU calculator based on room dimensions, insulation, and window size before buying as undersized radiators are the most common mistake homeowners make.

Place radiators under windows where possible as this counteracts cold air dropping from the glass and improves heat circulation. Never place furniture directly in front of radiators as it blocks heat significantly.

Fit thermostatic radiator valves on every radiator for individual room temperature control and reduced energy waste.

Steel heats up fastest and is most common, cast iron retains heat longest but is heavy and expensive. Column radiators look great in period properties but take longer to heat up and cost more upfront.
