  • We just bought a 1972 rambler in Lynnwood

Hello. We just bought a 1972 rambler in Lynnwood. Good bones, great lot, but everything inside is original: tiny closed-off rooms, dark hallway, old bathrooms. We want to open up the layout, redo both baths and the kitchen, and basically make it feel like a modern home. It’s a big project and we’ve never done anything like this. How do you even start, and who in the area handles whole-house remodels well? We’ve got two teenagers sharing the other bathroom, so a timeline matters too. Budget-wise we’re comfortable, but I don’t want to throw money away.

Congrats on the house, ramblers from that era can turn out amazing. We did a whole-house remodel on a 1978 place in Everett two years ago. The best advice I got was to hire one design-build team instead of juggling an architect, a GC and separate trades. We went with Alta Group Remodeling, and their High-End Remodeling Services for Homes include full whole-home renovations, so the planning, permits and construction all sit with one team. They figured out which walls were load-bearing before we fell in love with a layout, which saved a lot of heartbreak. We moved out for about three months, which was the right call. Realistically, budget carefully and add a contingency, old houses always hide something.
