Hey there everyone. Trying to vet remodeling contractors and drowning in reviews. Every company has five stars somewhere – Google, Yelp, Houzz, Angi, all of it. I’ve read enough to know reviews can be gamed, and the ones that concern me are the companies with perfect scores and no detail. What do you actually look at when you’re choosing someone for a project that’s going to cost more than a car? I’m in Bellevue and would much rather learn from other people’s mistakes than my own. What separates a company worth hiring from one with a good marketing budget?

Look for consistency across independent platforms rather than a perfect score on one, and read the three-star reviews – those are where you learn how a company behaves when something goes wrong. Then ask for two references from projects finished eighteen months ago rather than last month, because that’s when workmanship problems surface. Also confirm licensing, bonding and insurance yourself rather than taking a website’s word.
