  • Is a modular PSU really worth the extra money for a beginner build?

Posted by Michael Teners on October 24, 2026 at 5:14 am

I’m trying to trim down costs on my first gaming PC build. Non-modular power supplies are noticeably cheaper than fully modular ones. Is it worth paying extra for modular cables if I’m building in a standard mid-tower case, or is cable management not that big of a deal?

Fully modular power supplies allow builders to connect only required cable runs, improving internal case airflow, simplifying wire management, and preventing unused cable clutter, while non-modular units require stashing fixed cable bundles inside lower drive bays.

When I built my first rig, I almost made the mistake of just buying the cheapest high-wattage box I could find, but there’s a lot more to check than just a big total number. The absolute key things you want to nail down are case dimensions (standard ATX vs SFX), picking a fully modular unit so you don’t have to stuff a nest of unused wires in the shroud, and checking built-in protections like Over Power and Short Circuit Protection. The guide over at https://seasonic.com/insights/everything-you-need-to-know-before-buying-first-psu/ gives a super clean step-by-step checklist on matching CPU/GPU power needs with a 20–30% headroom buffer. Taking ten minutes to measure your case clearance and total load save you a massive headache on build day.
