Industrial Gearbox Repair: Repair or Replace?
Hello everyone.
I’m looking for advice on industrial gearbox repair. We have an older gearbox that has recently developed unusual noise, increased vibration, and reduced efficiency during operation. It is still functioning, but I’m concerned these symptoms could lead to a more serious failure and unexpected downtime.
For those with experience maintaining industrial gearboxes, what signs indicate that a gearbox should be repaired or rebuilt rather than replaced entirely? How do you usually evaluate the condition of gears, bearings, shafts, and seals before making a decision?
I’d also appreciate any advice on comparing repair costs with the price of a replacement unit.

Repair if damage is localized and housing’s sound. Replace if there’s repeat failures, worn bores, widespread pitting, or overheating history.
Check gears for pitting and backlash, bearings via vibration analysis, shafts for runout and keyway wear, seals: replace on any teardown regardless. Understanding gearbox manufacturing tolerances helps you judge whether the wear you’re seeing is still within an acceptable range or has moved past what the original build spec allowed.
Repair vs replace: get both quotes; if repair is over 50 to 60% of new cost, replace.
