It can be really tough to find programs that aren’t just repetitive busy work. My sister had the same problem until we found some better activities for people with intellectual disabilities in our area. She started going to a program at Gateway and she absolutely loves it there. They do everything from art projects to community outings and even some vocational training that feels relevant to her life. It is great because they actually listen to what the participants want to do instead of just forcing a schedule on them. She has become much more outgoing since she started and she has even picked up some new hobbies. I think the key is finding a place that values creativity and social interaction. You should definitely look for a place that has a diverse calendar of events so he doesn’t get stuck doing the same thing every single day. It has made a world of difference in her overall mood and she feels much more independent now.
