  • Comparing Different Automation Approaches

Posted by emily kessel on October 22, 2025 at 1:52 am

I’ve spent three months researching home automation systems near me and wanted to share my findings. There are essentially three approaches: DIY with off-the-shelf products, professional installation with consumer brands, or full custom integration with professional-grade equipment. DIY costs $2K-5K but requires significant technical knowledge and time investment. Professional installation with consumer brands runs $5K-12K and offers better integration with reasonable ongoing costs. Custom integration starts at $15K and provides the most seamless experience but creates some vendor lock-in. I’ve interviewed seven companies and noticed huge differences in their approaches. Some focus purely on product installation while others emphasize lifestyle integration and user training. Certifications matter more than I initially thought – CEDIA members generally demonstrated deeper knowledge. Also discovered that ongoing support models vary wildly. Some charge annual fees, others offer per-incident support, and a few include free support for the first year. The biggest lesson: cheapest isn’t always best value, and most expensive doesn’t guarantee quality.
