  • Brewery owner here, and merch has quietly turned into a real revenue line for us

Brewery owner here, and merch has quietly turned into a real revenue line for us. The problem is that our current shirts feel cheap next to what other taprooms are selling, and customers notice. I want retail quality rather than promotional quality, but I don’t know how to specify that or what it costs. Anyone made the jump from giveaway shirts to something people actually pay for? We sell out of the front of house rather than online, so people are touching the shirts before they buy, which makes the feel of the fabric matter more than I expected it would.

The difference is mostly in the blank and the print technique, not the artwork. Retail buyers care about the feel of the garment and whether the print is soft rather than a thick plastic slab sitting on the fabric. Ask specifically about softer inks or discharge style printing on cotton, and hold samples before deciding. We reworked our merch line with PromoBox using their Apparel Printing & Embroidery Services and the jump in perceived quality was worth the extra couple of dollars per unit. Start with two designs and reorder the one that sells rather than buying a wide range at once.
