  • Big storm last night in Snohomish, and our basement took

Posted by Alisa Volkova on September 23, 2026 at 7:04 am

Hey. Big storm last night in Snohomish, and our basement took on about three inches of water. The sump pump couldn’t keep up. Carpet, drywall and a bunch of stored boxes are soaked. We’ve never had this happen before. What’s the right order of things: insurance, cleanup company, or both at the same time? We’re in the middle of a work week and I’m totally overwhelmed. Any guidance is appreciated. The kids’ playroom is down there too, so a lot of toys got soaked.

Both at the same time, basically. Call your insurance to open a claim, and get a mitigation company out right away, because every hour of standing water makes it worse. We had nearly the same thing in Monroe a couple of years back. We called Encore Construction and they were out fast with pumps, pulled up the wet carpet, cut out the bottom of the drywall and set up drying equipment for several days. They worked with our adjuster directly, which I really appreciated because I had no idea what was covered. Check your policy for flood versus water backup coverage, it matters a lot. And get a backup sump pump with a battery, lesson learned. Stay safe and don’t touch any outlets near the water.
