  • Anyone else survive a complex migration from Magento to Shopify recently?

We finally pulled the trigger on moving our mid-market ecommerce store from Adobe Commerce (Magento) to Shopify and frankly, it was a emotional roller coaster. If you’ve been running on Magento for years like we were, you know that it’s awful: manual server updates, a new security patch every few days, multiple retainer’s worth of developers keeping our infrastructure up, and third-party modules that break every time you alter your core codebase.

The planning phase alone to transition from magento to shopify took us almost four months of agonizing preparation – before we wrote a single line of code or moved a product record. The most painful part was definitely migrating seven years of historic customer data, complex variant options, and custom product fields without losing any of our established SEO authority or URL redirect patterns.

It’s been two months since we launched our new infrastructure and we could not be more thrilled. Our site speeds instantly improved, our page loading speed decreased by dozens of seconds, our marketing teams can create new landing pages without an engineering support ticket, and the burden of hosting our own infrastructure is lifted. Our conversion rate has already increased by 15% and climbing! What is the most painful aspect of migrating from legacy infrastructure that you’ve experienced?
