I actually think occasional security checks are reasonable for an online gambling account. A login from a new device, a password reset or another unusual activity can be a good reason to ask for additional confirmation. What matters to me is that the site explains what is happening instead of leaving the user wondering whether something has gone wrong. I’d also keep two-factor authentication enabled if it’s available, since that adds another layer without necessarily making normal access complicated. Identity verification itself is a separate matter and can be requested for regulatory or payment-related reasons.
