Trying to talk my wife into upgrading and she keeps saying our current tent
Good afternoon folks. Trying to talk my wife into upgrading and she keeps saying our current tent works fine. Technically true – it does not leak and it stands up. But it takes both of us forty minutes and there is a lot of muttering involved. How do I make the case that spending real money on this is worth it when the current one is not actually broken? Or is she right and I am just gear obsessed?

She is technically right and you are also right, which is the annoying part. Here is the argument that works: the metric is not whether it functions, it is how many trips you actually take. Forty minutes of muttering is a tax on every single outing, and taxes reduce consumption. We went from three trips a year to nine after switching to family tents for camping with inflatable frames – Coody’s setup is one person with a hand pump. Not because the old one broke, but because the friction disappeared. Frame it as cost per trip rather than sticker price, that is the argument that lands. And let her do the setup once herself, alone, on a windy evening. That conversation tends to end quickly and in your favour.
